Beast of the Middle East

2011 September 5
by Rob Maher

‎20 days, 19 shows, 27 flights, 10 beds slept in, 6 countries and 16 bases later I am finally home. Woohoo! It was an amazing adventure. We did shows in Abu Dhabi, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Krygyzstan. If you are planning a dream vacation I would avoid these places. Abu Dhabi is 90% humidity at all times. Oman isn’t as hot but its also a lot less fun to say than Abu Dhabi. Bahrain was awesome because we got to stay in a hotel and perform indoors one show. Advantage Bahrain. In Kuwait we got to stay at another hotel but Kuwait is a dry country, no alcohol. Boo! Advantage everywhere else. And Kuwait is ridiculously hot. I think the sun lives there. Afghanistan is awesome. I could totally summer there. Kidding. It’s motherfucking Afghanistan! We performed at 8 bases in Afghanistan. We were based in Bagram, thats the base the Seal Team that killed Bin Laden is based out of. Wow. We ended the trip in Krygyzstan which is actually quite beautiful.

This trip was by far the hardest I’ve ever worked in my comedy career. But more importantly, it was the greatest and most rewarding work I’ve ever done. It was truly an honor to meet these men and women and to perform for them. It always makes you feel good to make someone laugh but it was much different on this trip. These soldiers truly need to laugh. To have them thanking us after each show was something I’ll never forget.

Thank you to all the servicemen and women we met on this trip. Thank you for the sacrifice you make and the sacrifice your family makes. Keep doing what you do, its important work. Get home safe and come see me perform here in the states. Its cooler here and the pillows are much softer. HUA!

On the Rob and Joe Show this week we interviewed Michael Chamberlain.  He’s our Entertainment Correspondent who doesn’t really watch much TV or see many movies.  We talk the Emmys and Louis CK.  Its hilarious.  It really is.

Alaska Baby!

Rob Maher in AlaskaI just got back from performing two shows in Alaska with my boy Tommy Davidson. We performed at Eielson Air Base which is just outside of Fairbanks and at the Richardson/Elmendorf Joint Base in Anchorage. Alaska was beautiful. The air seems so much cleaner there. You almost feel guilty for farting outside. Almost. As for the shows, amazing. I love me some Military Base crowds. So much energy in the room. It’s an event not a show. Here are some pics from the trip.

R.I.P. Macho Man

2011 May 26

I don’t think I’ve enjoyed anything in my life as much as I enjoyed watching wrestling as a kid. Every Saturday morning I was there in front my TV mesmerized. It was my religion. I had my Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka poster on my door for years. I wish I still had it. I believe this was the poster. My Dad and I drove to this high school gym to watch WrestleMania 1 on closed circuit. They didn’t have pay per view back then. The next year pay per view was available. We ordered it but something happened with our cable company and all that came up on the WrestleMania 2 channel was fuzz. I went to bed devastated I’d missed it. But I no way was I going to miss next years. WrestleMania 3 was epic. Andre the Giant vs Hulk Hogan in front of 90,000 plus at the Pontiac Silver Dome. And the greatest match of all time, Randy “Macho Man” Savage against Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat.

There’s a lot I could say about the Macho Man but I couldn’t say it any better than ESPN’s Bill Simmons already did. This article sums it all up for me.

Thank you Randy Savage. You were a legend.

Tommy Davidson and I did our thing at Misawa Air Base and at Yokosuka Naval Base.  Here’s a few pics:

These shows were shortly after we killed Bin Laden.  Here was my short and sweet take on it.  Enjoy.

We will be headed to Alaska in few weeks.  Details coming soon.
